Boston
The tranquil farming village of Boston lies situated in the KwaZulu Natal
Midlands just over an hour from Durban, and though small, it is well known for
its scenic landscapes consisting of rolling green pastures, lush forests and
well stocked dams and streams. Lying in the Mkhomazi and Elands River valley of
KwaZulu-Natal, Boston is often associated with its neighbour Bulwer, and as a
result the two towns have formed their own tourism association, the Boston
Bulwer Beat which also includes the Upper Dargle region. The area was originally
inhabited by San hunter gatherers, and later saw large numbers of white
settlers making their way from the Cape colony through the area during the late
1830's and early 1840's. Today the area is synonymous for its dairy farming and
its hospitality, with an impressive selection of establishments available from
quaint country hotels, guesthouses, farms and B&Bs, to rustic self-catering
cottages, backpack lodges and campsites..
As a tourism destination Boston offers its visitors a wide variety of
interesting outdoor activities which include some of the best hang gliding and
paragliding in the world, with international events being held there from time
to time. Other activities in Boston include scenic hiking trails through the
nearby Impendle Nature reserve and surrounds, abseiling, mountain biking, tubing,
rafting and kayaking. Birdwatching in the area is also extremely popular, and it
boasts a total of over a hundred various species, of which three feature on the
endangered species list - the Wattled Crane, Blue Swallow and Cape Parrot. Due
to the clean air and pristine waters of the region, it has become an ideal
location for fishing, with many of the dams and streams being stocked with both
Brown and Rainbow trout. The Boston Country Club hosts a much anticipated annual
event, the Spring Flingand Country fair, that includes a mouth-watering
selection of food and activities for the entire family, such as potjiekos
competitions, pony and tractor rides, live entertainment and the "Boston Cowboy
competition".
