Dundee
The coal mining town of Dundee is located in the heart of
Midlands Battlefields. Local historians offer guided tours to the famous
Anglo/Zulu battlefields and monuments. It was here, at the battle of Talana on 20 October 1899, that the first shots of The Anglo Boer War were fired.
The Talana Museum is set on the actual site of the battle 2 kilometres out of Dundee on the Vryheid Road. The museum houses an interesting
display on coal mining, an outstanding glass collection, a miner's house, and a Victorian farmstead which is furnished to serve as a local history and
military museum.
The
Consol Glass Factory in Dundee which is now closed was the oldest producing glass factory in the country.
Other places of historical interest near Dundee include the San-Bushman painting sites, which were inhabited between 2,000 and 4,000 years
ago.
The Isibindi Eco Reserve offers game viewing and walks through the 4,000 reserve, and also offers visitors the opportunity to participate in
Zulu cultural experiences.
