Inversanda Farm Cottages

Self Catering House, Cottage, Chalet Accommodation in Dargle

Inversanda is a country lover’s haven situated in the beautiful Dargle Valley in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. We are in the privileged position of being situated right at the end of the road; a place to relax and soak up the peace and tranquility.

Children, horses and well behaved pets are very welcome.

At Inversanda we are passionate about 3 things: our farm, our animals and the magical valley in which we are so privileged to live.

Visitors have truly arrived once they head off down the 3km driveway and see the Nhlosane mountain amphitheatre unfold in front of them, with the farm nestling in its footsteps. The Dargle is a very special valley – a jewel that we treasure.

Inversanda is a place to come and re-connect and briefly leave the urban world behind. Sit on your verandah and soak up the peace and tranquility. There is nothing to beat a good glass of wine, good company, a fire and the stars. Suddenly you are able to put life into perspective.

The farm offers a break to a world where nature paints the panorama viewed from all the cottages. Sunny days are ideal for walking, mountain biking, picnicing by the river or simply having fun with the kids. While wet days are perfect for curling up with a good book in front of a roaring fire, playing board games, pool or table tennis.

The farm dates back to the 1800s and up until the 1970s the crops were all planted and harvested with working oxen. “After living in many other parts of the world we bought the farm in 1996 in our quest to find a refuge from the corporate world” says Tom Bate. “We also wanted a home where our two daughters Emily and Iona could grow up with mud on their boots, animals and lots of space” adds Lucinda. Today cattle and horses happily graze the 180 hectares of lush kikuyu pastures.

THE JUDGE’S HOUSE - A country house looking over the rolling hills of the Dargle Valley.

The Judge’s House is the former home of Tom’s parents David and Thadeen Bate and is ideal for 2 families to share who want lots of space. It is a short drive or walk from the farmhouse. David and Thadeen retired to the farm in their early 80s and the farm proved to be the tonic they both needed. David was to enjoy a further 15 years of active life riding the horses, fishing, growing veggies and taking his devoted dogs for long walks.

The Judge’s House has 2 double bedrooms (main en-suite) and 2 twin bedded rooms, family bathroom and a guest loo. It has a large fully equipped kitchen, formal dining room and large sitting room with a fireplace. The verandah has extensive views of the valley. There is also an adjoining granny flat with open plan bedroom/kitchen and bathroom which is ideal for young families who wish to bring a nanny with them.

FARMHOUSE PRIVATE WING - Cosy and light with all you need for a weekend escape.
4-5 guests: 1 family bedroom, 1 twin bedroom, 1 large bathroom.

The farmhouse was built to a scale more commonly found on the sugar cane estates of the north coast of KZN and was much larger than the family needed. The private wing was therefore converted into a self-contained unit to help the farm get on its feet. It has its own entrance and garden.

It also boasts the best fireplace on the farm which makes it really cosy in winter. It has a large sitting room, dining room and kitchenette. There is also a large family bedroom with an extra-long king size bed, twin bedroom and verandah with a magnificent view of the Nhlosane Mountain.

THE BARN COTTAGE - A favourite with families, especially roasting marshmallows over the open fire.
6 guests: 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom with bunk beds, 2 ensuite bathrooms.

The barn cottage was one of the original farm tractor sheds and comfortably sleeps 6. It is situated in a kikuyu field above the farmhouse where the horses often graze. It was converted largely using the farm staff when they had time to spare and took almost 2 years to complete.

It is ideal for families taking their children and friends out from school as the 2nd bedroom has twin beds, a bunk bed and en-suite bathroom with a shower. The main bedroom has an extra-long king size bed and full en-suite bathroom. There is a large open plan fully equipped kitchen/sitting room with a fireplace and large verandah with a wonderful view of the Nhlosane Mountain.

Situated at the end of the road, visitors are privy to the very special aura of our unique valley. One can simply relax and enjoy a good book by the fire or on the verandah, or alternatively take some invigorating exercise in your immediate surroundings.

Umgeni River
We are privileged to have 3km of the Umgeni River meandering through the farm. There are many picnic sites where visitors can spend lazy afternoons. The Umgeni used to be stocked with trout but now small-mouthed bass have taken over the river. They are still lots of fun to catch and there are plenty of them. Guests are most welcome to borrow either spinning or fly rods. In the Christmas holidays – rains permitting – the river transforms into mini rapids which are great for tubing. Tubes are kept at the farmhouse.

We have a variety of indoor and outdoor games available at the farm house including badminton, croquet, scrabble, jenga and a selection of puzzles, please come and ask us. Then if you are not worn out by the evening, or on rainy days, there is a pool table and table tennis table in a converted stable central to all the cottages.

Swimming Pool
The river is undoubtedly the favourite swimming spot but the farmhouse pool offers a convenient alternative. There is also a trampoline.

Farm Walks
The farm has walks to suit everyone. You can potter along the river and through the fields at your leisure, or put hiking boots on and head up into the hills behind the farm to enjoy incredible views of the Drakensburg Mountains from our favourite waterfall picnic spot.

Horse Riding
The horses are our passion and very experienced riders are most welcome to ride. For novices who would like a quiet hack we can recommend an excellent stable nearby. Small children are more than welcome to have a ride on a lead rein on one of our retired ponies.

MTB Trails
The valley and surrounding forestry are a mountain biker’s dream. For the intrepid there are seriously demanding routes with steep inclines. For the more casual cyclist the river offers a more relaxing alternative. GPS routes are currently being developed.
