Orchid Valley Lodge

Welcome to the wilderness shared between South Africa and the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Majestic mountains, rising to over 3000 metres above sea level, tower over the Umzimkulu River Valley. Home to Eland - Africa's largest antelope, and the Lammergeier (bearded vulture). A photographer's and wilderness lover's paradise.

Just outside Underberg, Orchid Valley Lodge is the ultimate in beauty, tranquility and privacy. Set on 200ha of private reserve, Orchid Valley boasts Umzimkulu River frontage and the best view of Bamboo Mountain. Access to the Lodge is via a steep dirt road therefore a vehicle with a high ground clearance is recommended.

The lodge accommodates a maximum of nine people and all four rooms have slate lined en suite bathrooms. Detached from the main lodge is the honeymoon suite which has the most incredible view from the king-size bed - this is made from giant pines from a 40 year old forest. There is a comfortable lounge area that over-looks the garden, Bamboo Mountain and the Umzimkulu River Valley. Adjoining the lounge is a bar - a must for those Berg sundowners. The lodge has a spacious dining area next to a large central fireplace that warms the lodge throughout, on clear, cold winter nights.

Orchid Valley Lodge is fully equipped and fully serviced. We provide all linen and bath towels for your use. There is a braai facility for which we supply firewood, however you are welcome to bring charcoal if you prefer. We recommend that guests bring ice, but apart from that, just bring yourself, your food and your drinks. With regard to attire, we strongly suggest that you pack clothing for all seasons - the weather here in the Drakensberg is almost entirely unpredictable.

For hiking enthusiasts this is the place to be. Many of our guests enjoy the walk up to Orchid Valley's own waterfall, often stopping to dip in one of the crystal-clear rock pools on the way. Of course a swim in the river is always inviting so don't forget swimming gear! Orchid Valley is your playground for the duration of your stay - bring your fishing rod or your mountain bike or your K2 - anything is possible. Many other activities are available and they aren't very far away - golf, horse riding, tubing, tours and restaurants - you only have to ask.
