Sunbird Cottage & House

Sunbird Cottage and Sunbird House are situated on the farm Glen Athol between Volksrust and Wakkerstroom, roughly 30km from each. We offer a chance to get away from it all on a working farm offering unsurpassed views of the surrounding mountains including the famous battlefields of Amajuba. 

Sunbird Cottage and House sits on the gorge overlooking an indigenous forest that is home to a wonderful variety of animals and forest birds, we have over 200 species of birds and is great for birders. Some of the species include: Bush Blackcap, Blue Korhaan, Bald Ibis, Martial Eagle and Gymnogene. 

The Cottage has a deck and the House has a sunroom which opens onto the gorge from which you can watch amazing sunsets over Amajuba and the surrounding valley. 

The farm offers great bass fishing, we have various dams for fishing and have 3 kayaks, two equipped for fishing and one kids kayak. For those that enjoy nature we have great walks and mountain biking. Sorry we do not allow Off Road or Quad Bikes. We also have numerous animals, including 6 dogs, so we do not allow pets.   Great space for kids to roam free and explore on their bikes. 

The cottage has 2 bedrooms and can sleep 4, it is fully equipped for self-catering and the lounge hosts a closed wood burning fireplace. The bathroom is a delight and one can enjoy a bath in the large oval tub while looking out over the forest and down into the gorge. The kitchen and lounge are open plan and it is a shared bathroom, with a shower and bath.  The main bedroom leads onto the deck, the 2nd bedroom has 2 single beds.   The deck has a table and benches, a weber and you can also hang a hammock on the deck.  The rate quoted is for 2 people. 

The house is a large rambling farmhouse with lots of space and is self-catering and fully equipped. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 with double beds, 1 with double bed and sleeper couch and 1 with 3 single beds and can sleep up to 10 people. There are two bathrooms, one en-suite. There is a large dining room, kitchen, lounge with a closed fireplace and a sunroom that open onto the gorge. It has an extensive front lawn for kids to play on and a jungle gym to the side of the house. Please check rates, depends on the number of people staying.

Linen and bath towels are provided but you need to bring your own Swimming towels if you plan to swim in the dams and tackle if you plan to fish.   We do not service the units, if you want them serviced it can be arranged at an extra cost.   Firewood is supplied for the fireplaces and braai but not charcoal.    Please note the cottage and house do not have a TV and no WiFi but the cellphone signal is good for connectivity.
