Scuba Diving

The Aliwal Shoal is a rocky reef which is the remains of an ancient sand dune approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Aliwal Shoal gives divers the unique opportunity to experience wreck, reef and seasonal shark diving at the same site. The reef is inhabited by many kinds of hard and soft corals and a variety of tropical and subtropical fish species as well as turtles, dolphins, eels and large predators. Aliwal Shoal is known especially for its abundance of grey nurse sharks (known locally as ragged tooth sharks or "raggies"), which congregate there to mate between July and November.

Please note that you have to have a license to Scuba Dive – you can contact the centres below to find out about their ‘learn to scuba dive’ courses.

There are a number of dive centres in and around Scottburgh and Umkomaas which do dive charters to Aliwal Shoal on a daily basis. Most dive centres are a 5 minute drive from the Aliwal Shoal Lodge

Shark Cage Diving
For the non-scuba divers, Shark Cage Diving is also available and no experience is needed. Children over 8 years old can also participate! Definitely an experience of a lifetime!

Surfing
Green Point is an exposed right-handed point break that has pretty consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. Offshore winds are from the west northwest. The ideal swell angle is from the south. With a high quality south swell this surf break can be world class. Even when there are waves, it's not likely to be crowded. Take care of rocks and sharks (especially during the sardine run).

When walking onto the beach from the Aliwal Shoal Lodge, turn right and walk for about 500m towards Green Point Lighthouse and paddle out before you get too close to the rocks!

Fishing
The Aliwal Shoal Lodge is situated on Clansthal beach which is a popular fishing spot all year round. During the sardine run, fishing here is a must!

Fishing can be done straight in front of the house or at any point from beach. The rocky outcrop to the left of the Aliwal Shoal Lodge, known as Errol Hayes Rocks, is also good for fishing. Green Point Lighthouse (a national monument) can be found at the southern end of the bay, to the far right of the Aliwal Shoal Lodge.

Fish: Clansthal beach can produce Shad, Blacktails, Karanteen, Garrick and most other edible species. It’s also famous for some nice size in-edibles such as skate.

PLEASE NOTE: The small rock pools situated on the far right of the beach cottage (known as Blamy Bay), before Green Point Lighthouse, are a breeding ground and fishing there in the small rock pools is illegal.

Croc World
Croc World is situated just 2.9km away from Aliwal Shoal Lodge on the R102 (Old Main Road, Scottburgh, Scottburgh/Umzinto North, 4180), and is an experience not to be missed out on. The park boasts many crocodiles, reptiles, snake and bird species, as well as some farm animals and a playground for the children to play in. Daily crocodile feeding sessions are at 11:00am and 3:00pm most days except for Mondays and the entrance costs R55 for adults and R35 for children aged 4-12.

Croc World is open 7 days a week, from 8:30am til 4:30pm.
